How to Sharpen Lineman Gaffs (and When Not To)

Follow the sharpening instructions that came with your climbers, and learn this from your instructor in person. Every manufacturer publishes its own procedure and gauge. This page is an overview only.

Basics

  1. Get the right gauge for your brand and model (e.g., a Bashlin #5 gauge is listed for Bashlin #14 gaffs, per retailer listing).
  2. Hand file only. Don’t use a grinder, which can overheat the steel.
  3. Keep the factory profile. Sharpen only where the manufacturer says to.
  4. Check with the gauge for length, width, thickness, and shape.
  5. Replace gaffs (or the whole climber, for permanent gaffs) that fail the gauge.
  6. Guard your gaffs when you’re not climbing.

Pole test

Your training will cover a test for gaff bite before climbing. Do it the way you were taught.
